Today is a brief look at how I plan full-page illustrations. I like having a full-page illustration as a chapter opener to help give me practice in telling a story in one panel and lately I’ve been using them to tell some of the stories that have been happening ‘behind the scenes’ as it were. Time is always a factor when telling comic stories, particularly comic stories that come out as slowly as webcomics, so I have to make decisions on what story elements to both put in and cut, depending on what I need for the story. I’ll go into a bit more detail on Tuesday as to what this scene entails, but here you’ll see just a few iterations of what I wanted to do with this illustration. I always have at least 4-5 drafts of a piece because my first draft is almost always the worst one. Here, I’m working out composition, lighting, and what would make the most impact. Which draft did I think was the best? You’ll find out next week!

In personal news- I have to get re-tested for gestational diabetes. My sister didn’t have it with any of her pregnancies, and neither did my mother, so I was hoping I would be okay, but it looks like that may not be the case. 😛 I take the second test today so cross your fingers that it comes out negative.
